Fermentation of the green juice of halophyte species with lactic acid\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bacteria could be a cost-efficient and safe method to separate proteins.<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In this practice, the aim is to produce bio-active and protein-rich feed supplement for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>aquacultures and livestock from halophyte juice. This type of feed could not only improve\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the animal health but could also provide a locally produced high-quality protein source. This\u00a0<\/span><\/span>decreases the dependency of protein imported from overseas, such as soybean. The protein\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is separated from green juice by acidification, which is done by fermenting the juice with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>lactic acid bacteria. During the fermentation, the produced lactic acid decreases the pH of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the green juice, which makes protein insoluble in water and allows it to coagulate.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Therefore, the protein-enriched concentrate can be easily separated, for example by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>centrifugation. As the produced cell mass is also present in the concentrate, it is desired to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>perform the fermentation using probiotic\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Lactobacillus<\/span><\/span>\u00a0strain. Halophyte species considered\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in AQUACOMBINE project are relatively rich in protein, for example, the crude protein\u00a0<\/span><\/span>content of green juice dry matter from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Tripolium pannonicum\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(sea aster) is up to 36.7 wt%,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>which is comparable to common legumes, such as lentil and chickpea.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Tripolium\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pannonicum\u00a0<\/span><\/span>juice also has high concentration of available sugars, thus additive feeding of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>micro-organisms is not required. Probiotic protein-enriched concentrate could also be a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>source of some other health beneficial compounds, such as phytochemicals and healthy\u00a0<\/span><\/span>fatty acids. The liquid fraction after separation can be utilized in biogas production, leading\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to zero-waste process. Overall, this method is cost-efficient and safe, and does not require\u00a0<\/span><\/span>high process temperatures or use of hazardous chemicals. Required fermentation time is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also short, and processing requires only a few equipment.<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
